Abstract
Explainer videos (EVs) have become an integral part of education. While they were already popular among learners and teachers before the pandemic, the range of resources has broadened, as more platforms and publishers have entered the field. Beyond merely consuming them, the production of self-created EVs is gaining attention, as it fosters not only digital competences but also strategic and communicative ones. This chapter provides insights into how EV production is currently integrated into the FL classroom (L2 English/L3 French, Spanish, and Russian) in German secondary schools (K-12), focusing on teacher motifs, experiences, and perceptions using semi-structured interviews (n=25). The findings highlight how teachers are shaping aspects of a new culture of learning and teaching by enhancing student engagement and activation. They further illustrate which topics and objectives are particularly suitable for student-created EVs, how teachers support the production process, and what challenges they have encountered.
