Museums are important social actors in the transfer of knowledge and museums are settings for the popularization of knowledge. Anyone who goes to a museum expects exhibits, but they also expect well-founded background knowledge about the exhibits. This background knowledge visitors usually learn from the accompanying texts. This article shows that these texts are not solitary products of abstract people, but are embedded in complex relationships between exhibits, space and museum visitors.
