Testing the FIB-SEM ring-core milling technique for microscale residual stress analysis in fiber composites

Abstract

To understand the manufacturing and damage processes in FRP and to improve the reliability of failure prediction, e.g. under fatigue loading, the knowledge of residual stresses at all scales from micro to macro is crucial. In this contribution, the microscale ring-core FIB-SEM technique is transferred and tested on FRP using a dual-beam FIB-SEM instrument. As a first step, epoxy resin specimens (RTM6) without fiber reinforcement are investigated. One specimen is analyzed without external loading, while a second is in situ loaded by a small loading device to a known load level. The preliminary study results are presented, along with the experimental setup, measuring procedure, and digital image-based analysis. A discussion of major factors influencing the measurement results is also included. The results confirm that the FIB-SEM ring-core technique is well suited for measuring microscale residual stresses in FRPs. Using a ring groove diameter of 10 μm, the obtained strain fields well represent the local stress state and a high accuracy is achieved.
