Abstract

Health apps and wearables are becoming increasingly popular. Through sensor measurements and manual entries, people can easily record a variety of health-related parameters in their daily lives. These data contain valuable information not only for personal healthcare but also for secondary uses, such as medical research. The potential has been recognized, and initiatives for the shared use of health data, like the European Health Data Space, aim to include data from apps and wearables in addition to traditional clinical health data. However, the current draft leaves open how citizens can exercise control over the sharing of their data. We describe a new, standardized approach for obtaining and managing consent for sharing health data from apps and wearables: the Standard Health Consent. The digital Standard Health Consent platform could give citizens control over the use of their health data and contribute to the development of a fair and trustworthy health data ecosystem. In an initial pilot survey with physicians, the opinions of this professional group regarding health data digitally collected by patients themselves, as well as digital consent management, are recorded.
