Abstract
Composite materials offer high strength and stiffness to weight ratios, adjustable directional material properties and exhibit gradual damage behaviour. The complexity of these materials and their parameter scatter combined with possible unpredicted events such as impact events at turbine blades or wind turbines contribute to the prediction uncertainty of the operational capability. Thus, research efforts towards the development of trustworthy methods for online structural integrity identification can improve the reliability and safety. A problem often encountered in vibration-based structural integrity identification methods is the measurement of similar feature values. i.e. modal properties, for different structural states. The analysis of whole or partial sequences could provide qualitative and quantitative information with a higher reliability, compared to the existing classical analysis of isolated elements. Sequences of damage-dependent features are evident in the case of composite materials where the damage evolution results in a measurable gradual change of the dynamic behaviour of the structure. Through the application of sequence analysis, gradual damage behaviour of composite materials and an event-driven diagnostic approach possible synergistic effects can be achieved, increasing the accuracy of the composite structural diagnosis. In these investigations, a numerical model of a composite rotor is applied for the generation of multiple damage scenarios which are saved in a databank and used for sequence analysis. Damage-dependent features, i.e. eigenfrequencies, are extracted, discretised and transformed to appropriate sequences. Similarity estimation is conducted between partial and whole sequences to estimate the damage condition.
