Abstract

For multi-cell pressure vessels based on thermoplastic composites, a new boss design is developed which is based on threaded joints. Resulting from the high inner pressure of hydrogen storage systems large axial loads need to be transferred through the threaded joint. This paper presents the design of such boss areas as well as shows experimental results of tension tests of co-consolidated short fiber reinforced threads. For this purpose, the test specimens as well as the manufacturing process, which is similar to the manufacturing process of the multi-cell storage systems, are presented. The experimental results show, that the co-consolidated threads show sufficient strength for highly loaded applications like pressure vessel bosses. In addition to this finite element analysis of the threads are presented which show good agreement with the experimental results.
