Abstract

Mineral-impregnated carbon fiber (MCF) reinforcements leaverage the temperature stability of various mineral binders, such as portland cement or geopolymer, to mitigate the rapid deterioration of conventional thermosetting matrices at elevated temperatures. Additionally, they provide exceptional bond to concrete due to their excellent chemical compatibility. Magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) is a mineral- binder that has recently attracted significant scientific interest due to its excellent mechanical performance, fast setting, heat insulation properties, the ability to incorporate high amounts of filler material together with comparatively low density, and eco-friendly production routes. MOC naturally enables very high water/binder ratios, which confers excellent workability and makes it a promising binder for MCF. In the study at hand, a MOC impregnation matrix tailored towards CF is developed and the mechanical performance is tested. ESEM provide insights into the microstructure and the quality of impregnation. Given its non-hydraulic properties, MOC offers multiple possible recycling routes with a high potential to contribute to a greener construction industry.
