Abstract

This study compares the long-distance wear behavior of a Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553) alloy and an in-situ titanium matrix composite (TMC) containing 2 wt.% boron carbide (B4C), both produced from elemental powders. Both materials were hot compacted at 1250 °C and the initial microstructure and hardness were investigated. Then, tribological properties were evaluated in 5000 m block-on-ring tests against 100Cr6 steel at normal loads of 20 – 50 N and sliding speeds of 0.10 – 0.50 m/s. The mass loss, coefficient of friction, temperature, wear-track profilometry, surface condition and near-surface microstructure were analyzed. The TMC exhibited a substantially lower mass loss, wear coefficient, and energy wear rate across almost the entire parameter range, while its coefficient of friction remained at a similar level or was higher in comparison to the unreinforced reference material. The Ti-5553 alloy degradation involved combined adhesive-abrasive wear, surface oxidation and stick-slip behavior associated with the repeated formation and rupture of micro-welds. These processes caused severe near-surface deformation of the α phase lamellar microstructure. In the TMC, the retained B4C particles surrounded by a reaction layer and in-situ formed titanium carbide and titanium boride colonies supported the contact load and restricted matrix removal. Observed wear of the steel counter sample produced an iron oxide-rich layer on the composite sample. The results demonstrate that in-situ reinforcements fundamentally change load transfer and wear behavior, providing superior long-distance wear resistance despite comparable or locally higher coefficient of friction.
