Abstract
Background: Hormonal rhinitis is defined as a subform of nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) where the rhinitic symptoms are caused by hormonal imbalances or by endocrine disorders. The aim of the following review is to analyze that form of rhinitis regarding pathophysiology, diagnostics, and therapy. Methods: A literature search was carried out in PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar using the terms "hormonal rhinitis", "rhinitis and pregnancy", "endocrine rhinitis". Results: Pregnancy rhinitis is so far the most investigated "hormonal rhinitis". But also hormonal imbalances during puberty, menstrual cycle, menopause and endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism and acromegaly can affect the endonasal mucosa and cause rhinitic symptoms. Conclusion: Rhinitic symptoms caused by pregnancy or other hormonal imbalances, hypothyroidism or acromegaly are classified as hormonal rhinitis. But the exact pathomechanism is still vague and needs further investigation.
