Abstract

The bismuth rich bromidostannate(II) Bi18Sn7Br 24 = (Bi95+)2[Sn7Br 2410-] was crystallized from a melt of bismuth, tin, and BiBr3. X-ray diffraction on a single crystal revealed a polar, tetragonal structure (space group I4cm, no. 108) with lattice parameters a = 1323.70(5) pm and c = 1816.86(8) pm at 110(5) K. In agreement with Wade's rules and quantum chemical calculations, the homonuclear nido cluster Bi 95+ is a monocapped square antiprism (point group C 4v). The anions of the bromidostannate(II) groups mainly comply with the pseudosymmetry of the space group I4/mcm and thereby affect substantial disorder of the SnII cations.
