Abstract

Results of the household survey „Mobility in towns – SrV 2013“ are presented for different groups of towns in comparison to the results from 2008. After describing methodological changes, some changed conditions like reurbanisation, demography, motorization and ownership of driver licenses are reflected. Although relatively stable average values for modal split or driven kilometres were detected, different trends in using the modes among young adults and seniors seem to be of particular interest. While seniors demonstrate a distinct cohort effect and the continuation of a mobility based primarily on an own car, young adults are using the car less often. In relation to number of trips the share of public transport (PT) and bicycles in large cities increased by a total of 8 percent between 2008 and 2013, while car use decreased by 5 percent. In relation to kilometres travelled cycling increased by 11 percent, while car use and PT lost 2 and 5 percent, respectively.
Even though in the coming years the baby-boom generation will carry its automobility into retirement and, at least at first, shape transport in towns, the authors see the mobility behavior of younger generations as more relevant for future planning.
