Abstract

This paper proposes an analytical method for the efficient prediction of the effective joint pressure in interference fits of metal/fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) joints. The approach can be used by engineers to efficiently estimate key design parameters such as laminate structure or wall thickness. A simplified model for describing joints with anisotropic material behavior is developed using analytical models of press-fitted isotropic cylinders known from DIN 7190 for interference fits, among others. The model is based on various assumptions about the structural behavior of the FRP component. The presented calculation method enables the calculation of joint pressure curves that are dependent on circumferential speed with minimal computational effort. These curves can be used to draw conclusions about functionality and load transferability within a defined speed range by comparing them with the loads that need to be transferred. To ensure accuracy, the analytical calculation approach is checked against the results of a corresponding numerical simulation. This paper presents practical design recommendations for metal/FRP interference fits with high circumferential speeds. The recommendations are derived based on a parameter variation analysis. The aim is to facilitate the time and computationally efficient design of hybrid press-fitted shaft-hub connections in metal-FRP designs considering the deformation induced by centrifugal force during operation.
