Abstract

Background: In addition to cognitive symptoms, many people with dementia are affected by social isolation. To enhance cultural participation of this vulnerable group within museum settings, the Erinnerungs_reich—museums as medicine for people with dementia project developed, implemented, and evaluated training courses with a train the trainer approach, enabling participating art educators to implement dementia-sensitive museum offers. How satisfied were participants with the training courses and what aspects were adjusted to improve them? Methods: Four training courses were held in Dresden, Görlitz, Freiberg, and Leipzig (Saxony, Germany) in spring/summer 2023. As part of an accompanying formative evaluation, participants rated various aspects of the training course on a six-point Likert scale from very satisfied to very dissatisfied and in free text format. Results: In total, 51 employees from 33 museums took part in the training courses (75% women, M = 41.1 years). The majority of evaluations were highly approving: 74% of participants were very satisfied with the training courses. The evaluation after the first training course revealed the opportunity for peer-to-peer exchange and the practical component as being in comparative need of improvement. Targeted adjustments for subsequent training courses led to an improved rating of these aspects. Conclusion: Through the train the trainer principle and the practical, targeted conception, the training courses offer an approach to sustainably sensitize art educators to the special needs of people with dementia and to enable them to implement dementia-sensitive museum offers. The high demand and the positive evaluations underscore the need for dementia-sensitive training programs—in cultural sectors and beyond.
