Abstract

Structural batteries are multifunctional composites that try to achieve a better overall compromise between mechanical and electrochemical properties. These consist of several components, each with a wide range of materials available for selection. Finding the optimal combination is a complex task due to the large number of possible combinations and various physical interactions. Furthermore, high manufacturing costs and the vast number of design configurations makes it impractical to test them all experimentally. To address this complexity and streamline the experimental process, QUINTUS is presented, a computational screening framework. QUINTUS efficiently estimates the mechanical and electrochemical performance of multifunctional structural batteries. Its modular architecture allows the incorporation of different analytical and simulation-based tools. Further, employing models with different degree of fidelity allows QUINTUS to be used for rapid dataset screening and elaborate performance estimation. A comprehensive material database has been built with 60 materials from literature and own experiments that are actively being researched for battery applications. Results for a screening of a layered battery designs with 28 layers are presented. Analysis of the available data reveals multiple configurations with superior multifunctional performance compared to currently reported designs.
