Abstract

With the rapid growth of population, the construction industry will grow drastically in the future, causing a great burden on the environment. During the cement production, a large volume of carbon dioxide can be emitted into atmosphere, which could incur irreversible climate change. Biochar derived from bio-waste is a promising carbon-negative material. Biochar possesses great potential in reducing CO2 emission due to its carbon sequestration ability and it has been used as a supplementary construction material. The chapter reviewed the production and origins of biochar and provided up-to-date information on its application in the construction field. The impact of biochar on the properties of construction and building materials, in particular cement-based composites, were comprehensively outlined and discussed. Future research prospects of utilizing biochar in construction material are also suggested.
