Abstract

Background
This paper describes the spatio-temporal analysis of antibiotic prescriptions data for the city of Dresden and the publication of the results in a geoportal.

Methods
The antibiotic prescriptions are analyzed for spatio-temporal patterns using time series analysis and pattern recognition methods. To clarify these patterns the prescription data is joined with further parameters and analyzed for statistical correlations. This is demonstrated using the example of the relationship between antibiotic prescriptions and cases of respiratory infections from Google Flu Trends.

Results
There has been detected a high to very high correlation between cases of respiratory infections and antibiotic prescriptions of the macrolide group. These and other results are made available to the public in the Geoportal ANTI-Resist.

Conclusions
For the considered substances of the macrolide group the data of respiratory infections from Google Flu Trends can act as a predictor variable and can be integrated into an early warning system via a simple regression model for predicting current critical antibiotics states.
