Abstract
Thermodynamically open systems may spontaneously form ordered structures. Dynamical patterns of chemical concentration, from rotating spiral waves to anti-spiral waves with inwardly propagating chemical waves to super-structures like super-spiral waves, have been found in a subgroup of these systems, the spatially coupled oscillatory chemical reactions. The oscillatory systems are modelled by the
complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Analytical and numerical solution of this equation yields explanations of the experimental observations.
