Abstract
A challenge for museums is the curation of artefacts whose value and purpose is revealed only through their use or performance. The purpose of a scientific instrument, ritual object or artisanal tool, for example, may only be fully appreciated through their dynamic and interactive qualities. This applies in particular for artefacts that involve artistic or playful performances, such as musical instruments, tools for art making, toys or theatre puppets. However, despite their dynamic nature, conservation practices often necessitate that these objects be displayed in a static, "lifeless" state, detached from their former context and interaction with the audience.
In this work, we review existing conceptual frameworks, technologies and workflows for the digitisation, archiving, representation, and experiencing of performative artefacts. We then introduce the beginning of a conceptual schema designed to aid the planning and execution of performative artefact heritage.
