Abstract
Background: Only a small number of scientific studies deals withwork-related strain and diseases of physiotherapists in Germany. Nevertheless, their spectrum of strain and disease can be compared to the more frequently investigated health care professions. Objective: This study collected and evaluated physiotherapeutic occupational representatives' as well as health and safety stakeholders' attitudes, opinions and subjective experience on the topic of work-related strain and diseases of physiotherapists.Method: A focus group discussion with 5 experts of professional physiotherapy associations and the "Berufsgenossenschaft fur Gesundheitsdienst undWohlfahrtspflege (BGW)" was performed. Results: The expert group identified musculoskeletal and mental strains as the main burdens of physiotherapeutic work. In addition, they found dermal, infectious and to some extent physical impacts relevant for this professional group. The stress factors were attributed to specific work-related diseases (including occupational diseases). Conclusions: The results of the focus group discussion are comparable to the current state of international research. First indications of existing prevention and intervention needs of physiotherapists in Germany can be deduced.
