Abstract

In this paper we study the network performance when a combination of TCP and Network Coding techniques is used over wireless links. The poor behavior of TCP over lossy channels is well-known, especially when these links exhibit a bursty behavior (i.e. errors tend to happen in bursts), as it is the case for indoor scenarios. In the paper we exploit the Kodo Network Coding implementation and we integrate it with the TCP protocol within the ns-3 framework. We carry out an extensive simulation campaign over IEEE 802.11 links and the results show that Network Coding can effectively hide the impairments of the wireless channels. Although this could be also achieved by the IEEE 802.11 MAC retransmission scheme for memoryless channels, when a bursty model is used, the results yield that Network Coding is able to offer a much better performance.
