Abstract
Using data from the Saxon Longitudinal Study, an attempt is made to characterize the supporters of the "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident" (PEGIDA) in comparison to opponents of PEGIDA and persons undecided in this regard. The survey waves of 2015 (337 persons), 2016 (271 persons) and 2017/18 (314 persons) were included in the analysis. The median age of participants across these waves was 43 to 45 years. In detail, differences in socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes and psychological well-being are presented as a function of attitudes towards PEGIDA. Across the three waves, a relatively constant picture emerged: (1) A quarter to a third of the respondents classified themselves as supporters of PEGIDA. The highest percentage approval of PEGIDA was found in wave of 2015, when PEGIDA was still a relatively new phenomenon. (2) PEGIDA supporters were more critical of the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany and especially of refugee policy. They classified themselves as politically (rather) right-wing and would vote more often for the AfD. However, they felt threatened not only by refugees, but also by poverty in old age. She was rather negative about the future chances of children. This rather negative view of the world (measured by political attitudes) was accompanied by somewhat higher psychological distress on some indicators (depressiveness), which were surveyed using standardized psychological instruments. PEGIDA supporters felt more like East Germans than did undecideds and PEGIDA opponents. There was a tendency for their systemic attachment to the GDR before reunification to be greater, and they saw less in common between East and West Germans. This speaks for a connection between the (rather negative) experience of reunification and a (higher) approval of PEGIDA's goals. (translated by DeepL)
