Abstract
As part of the planning for the expansion of the Einsiedel waterworks by a second filter stage, Südsachsen Wasser GmbH, as the operator, is testing dead-end ultrafiltration with downstream calcium carbonate filtration as a possible process on a two-stage pilot plant. In order to identify a preferred model, the two inside-out operated hollow fibre membrane modules inge dizzer 5000+ and Pentair X-FLOW AQUAFLEX 55 are investigated in comparative tests at the pilot plant and influences of the flushing settings, the filtration duration, the filtration flux, the treatment chemicals and the powdered activated carbon dosing as suspension on the membrane operation are discussed comparatively. Powder activated carbon dosing as a process for adsorption of undesirable trace substances such as odours and flavours or pesticide metabolites is influenced in its effectiveness by several factors. In order to promote efficient use, this paper discusses different dosing methods such as pure shock dosing or hybrod dosing, a combination of continuous and discontinuous dosing methods, comparatively for the removal of the PPP metabolites metazachlorosulfonic acid and metazachloric acid. Furthermore, a comparison of different powdered activated carbons is made for the adsorption of DOC, GGS 2-MIB, geosmin and beta-ionone as well as the aforementioned PPP metabolites from highly polluted reservoir water. The fact that an optimisation of the use of powdered activated carbon is of decisive importance is shown by the underlying investigations of many years of laboratory data on raw water in the Einsiedel waterworks, according to which an increasing trend in the concentrations of 2-MIB, geosmin and beta-ionone could be found in the raw water of the waterworks.
