Abstract

This chapter is a short introduction into the element carbon and its unique position in chemistry. The most important allotropic forms, i.e. the appearance of the element in different crystallographic structures with different properties, will be briefly described. General information will be given about the position of carbon in the periodic table, the abundance on Earth, and the atomic structure and the different forms of hybridization.
