Abstract
Specific substitution of passive rectifiers with controlled converters in existing DC networks can create energetic and operational advantages. Field tests with the bidirectional converter Hesop show that system optimisation is generally possible for line extensions of light rail networks, for increasing the power demand and for coping with degraded modes. This also includes the medium-voltage distribution grids by means of reactive power provision.
