Abstract
The availability of hospital-wide surveillance data of antimicrobial drug use and resistance is required for successful ABS programmes. Since the amendment of the German Infection Protection Act (Infektionsschutzgesetz [IfSG]) in 2011, continuous surveillance and evaluation of antimicrobial consumption data are mandatory for German hospitals. Monitoring of antibiotic consumption data enables internal and external benchmarking which is crucial to evaluate the impact of ABS-measures. As a member of the ABS-team clinical pharmacists are responsible for reporting antimicrobial use and therefore play an important role at implementing ABS programs.
