Abstract
In the extensive bibliography available on the schwa (‘ə’), empirical studies describing the actual use of the sign in linguistic communities that employ it for various communicative purposes are still scarce. This contribution aims to fill this gap by proposing a study focusing on texts published on GlobalProject, a platform that since 2002 has been giving voice to ‘movement mediactivists’ engaged on various political, social and environmental fronts. The analysis, based on a corpus constructed for the occasion, is mainly qualitative and describes the short diachrony of the sign (2018-2024) dwelling on three aspects: its graphic forms and variants, its frequency of use, and its semantic-referential functions. The results obtained make it possible to enrich the picture offered by works that have described the use of schwa in the queer community (Comandini 2021) and in niche publishing houses (Thornton 2022).
