Abstract

The paper contributes to the application of the DEM approach on the threshing process in
combine harvester threshing devices. The modeling is carried out using a commercial DEM
software, which entails limitations with regard to modeling opportunities and thus the need for
workarounds. The DEM modeling of the wheat plant, as well as the limitations and necessary
simplifications are described. Basic experimental tests (3-point bending tests, tensile tests,
compression tests, friction tests and damping tests) were conducted in order to parameterize
the wheat model. Subsequently, basic threshing tests using a conventional threshing unit were
carried out both numerically and experimentally. The results are compared and discussed in
the paper regarding grain separation along the concave and overall separation efficiency.
