Abstract
Today's working environment is experiencing an ongoing trend to embed employees in collectives like teams and work groups. The understanding of what role specific team stressors play in the work-related functioning of teams and their members is therefore an increasingly important challenge in organizational behavior literature. Since research on stressors and demands has primarily focused on the individual to date, I intend to expand the scope with this article by taking into account the multilevel phenomenon of stressors and demands in the context of teams. In so doing, I review research on stressors and demands in teams and work groups, and then I show how research in related fields may profit from a more balanced account and integration of frameworks on stressors. My theoretical elaboration not only significantly contributes to the literature on stressors at the individual and team levels, but also has important implications for related theory and practice. In highlighting such implications, future research and managers are informed as to how and why stressors in the context of teams differentially influence teams and their members.
