Abstract

Prestressed concrete beams are subjected to fatigue loading into the very-high-cycle fatigue range using a resonant fatigue testing facility. Contrary to common cylindrical specimen scales large scale beam specimens are tested and allow reproducing effects such as local stiffness degradation and stress redistributions from external to internal fibres which have a positive effect on the lifetime of concrete structures. The results are investigated regarding strain and stiffness development and compared to numerical simulations. The numerical model is an algorithm implemented into a commercial finite element software and is able to describe stiffness degradation due to fatigue loading. This allows the simulation of stress redistributions which cannot be measured in the tests. The results show a continuously progressing damage with a three-phase course. As a consequence stress redistributions from higher loaded edges into the inner fibres of the cross section occur which increases the lifetime of the structure.
