Abstract
What role does social support play in times of crisis? This chapter explores the health-promoting functions of social network relationships within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global crises. Emotional support within families, friendships, and community networks proves especially crucial for coping with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. In addition, practical assistance – such as financial aid and access to essential goods – plays a vital role in alleviating the adverse health effects of crises. Local networks, in particular, characterized by trust and reciprocity, strengthen the resilience of communities during crises and disasters. Overall, the analysis demonstrates that fostering and maintaining social support systems at both the individual and community levels is essential for buffering the negative impacts of global crises, as well as enhancing societal resilience.
