Safety Investigation on Traffic Scenarios using Virtual Environments in a Wave Field Synthesis Laboratory

As cars are becoming quieter, traffic safety is an increasingly important topic. Due to safety issues and reproducibility, experiments in this field are usually conducted in virtual environments (VE). The improvement of these VEs are object of current research. While navigating through traffic, not only visual, but also auditory cues are highly important. In this study, we investigate the auditory perception of pedestrians in car pass-by scenarios. An important aspect of pedestrian behavior in traffic is time-to-collision (TTC) estimation, where a person estimates the point in time when a vehicle would arrive at their position. TTC estimation is required when a pedestrian intends to cross a road while a vehicle is approaching. We present a pilot study on auditory TTC estimation for approaching vehicles, using the possibilities and flexibility of wave field synthesis in the Multi-Modal lab (MMM) at the TU Dresden. The results are compared with data from a similar experiment conducted by our project partners at Uni Mainz using a higher-order Ambisonics setup [Oberfeld, Wessels & Büttner, DAGA 2021].
