Abstract
The following work deals with the produced water, which occurs during oil and gas production, in the context of the treatment processes and the technologies used. In addition to processes that are already known in wastewater treatment, such as adsorption and ion exchange, new technologies such as desalination of the produced water by mechanical vapor compression will also be presented. Furthermore, the characteristic properties of produced water are shown, especially those that need to be removed. A special focus of the work is also the controversial "hydraulic fracturing" (fracking) and the associated use of water. This results in a comparison between the USA and Germany, especially with regard to the legal framework.
