Abstract

The common fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is a legally protected species in Germany. Within the Red List of Saxony, the salamander is critically endangered. In addition the highly pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) actually causes special threatening of the fire salamander in central parts of Europe. To counteract negative population trends, monitoring of known populations is highly important. Within this thesis, the population of S. salamandra located at the site Breiter Grund Tharandt near Dresden was ecologically investigated and valuated. \n\nTherefore 11 field studies along the spawning water and the way besides were conducted from March to September in 2017. Subsequently spatial and temporal distribution patterns as well as age class structure, gender relations, biometric data and threatening factors were analyzed. Individuals were identified using the program AmphIdent. Based on these results, the minimum number of individuals was calculated. Furthermore the super population size was estimated applying the POPAN method in program MARK. \n\nOverall, 1.537 individuals were captured and recorded, taking into account that the core habitat is located potamon around the charcoal kiln place and the Werthersäule. Considering the direct study site and acquisition period, age structure and gender ratios were generic and the health condition of the population was good in general. The estimated super population size of the fire salamander at this area ranged between 3.520 - 4.926 individuals (4.145 ± 357). However, latest studies confirmed the appearance of the brown trout Salmo trutta at headwater of the brook. This species represents one of the main predators of salamander larvae and is associated with an increasing larvae number at this habitat. With respect to that and in consequence of the rapid dispersal of Bsal, further population monitoring is recommended.
