Abstract

Panoramic cameras form an interesting alternative for a variety of photogrammetric recording and modelling tasks. The strengths of these cameras include very high-resolution potential and capability to record 360° panoramic images. This makes them very well suited for capturing indoor scenes and city squares for high-resolution applications. Precision and resolution have to be discussed separately when comparing panoramic cameras with conventional digital cameras. Rotating linear arrays offer the highest resolution potential. As an example, the authors describe the EyeScan M3 gigapixel camera in greater detail. To apply the camera for 3D measurement and object reconstruction purposes, geometric modelling and calibration issues have been solved.
