Abstract

Currently aviation is investigating electrical power drive systems (PDS) to support the de-carbonization of future aircrafts.
These motors are required to be lightweight, efficient and as reliable as today propulsion systems. For the insulation
system's design partial discharges are a main concern due to the high voltages, low air pressure and high temperatures in
the preferably compact design. The goal of this paper is to investigate the simultaneous influence of temperature and air
pressure on partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) on coupon insulation arrangements consisting of litz wire conduc-
tors and tape insulation. The PDIV decreases by up to 60 % with elevated temperatures up to 140 °C and low air pressure
down to 200 mbar.
