Abstract

The M-CMS (Multi-Channel Management System) optimises the transmission (dispatch) of a selection of any stack of data to users or addressees, who can be identified by IP addresses. In dispatching the data a transmission mode is applied, which uses a number of data channels within one or more DVB transmission channels (Digital Video Broadcasting). The best-suited data channel will be selected and the data will be transmitted entirely automatic. The selection of the channel is based on the transmission requirements of the provider or the user of such data with regard for Error Rate, Transmission Time and acceptable Transmission Cost. The M-CMS system is based on standard equipment (e.g. PCs and DVB Inserters made by the Rohde & Schwarz company [1, 3]) and on specifically developed computer software. The demonstration version of dedicated computer software was developed by the Technical University of Dresden, Germany (TUD) under contract of the European Space Agency (ESA). It was tested and verified in a demonstration set up. A demonstration is conceived to show specifically the optimised form of using a number of data channels in one DVB transmission channel or in a number of DVB transmission channels, over satellite as well as terrestrial networks.
