Abstract
Modular design and construction of chemical plants pose three challenges on process automation engineering: 1) Higher effort for instrumentation due to standardization must not exceed economy-of-scale effects, 2) current engineering methods for integrating package units must be automated, and 3) there is a need to design modular process operation strategies that may be integrated easily into an assembly operation strategy. Different approaches and research issues are discussed and evaluated by means of a modular research system.
