Abstract

The explosive growth in personal mobile cellular devices has resulted in increased network capacity demands for network providers. Advanced radio solutions have been released by the 3GPP LTE standards, such as advanced MIMO, carrier aggregation, femtocells, and coordinated multipoint transmission among others, in a bid to provide a stopgap solution to cater for the sudden influx in traffic. However, future market forecast suggests that demand will continue to rise spurred on by the Internet of Things, requiring new communication paradigms departing from the traditional signal processing enhancement techniques. One such approach is the notion of cooperation, where in the past fixed devices such as relays have played a role in providing extended coverage and capacity to the network. However, what if we now consider mobile devices as the cooperators? In fact, now the perception of mobile devices is slowly shifting from being purely user-centric, to devices that are seen simply as a "resource" that can offer a plethora of services in terms of computational power, storage, and context. Cooperation, coupled with the growing popularity of cloud services, could make this mobile device part of the cloud and form a pool of virtual resources, opening up a whole host of new market opportunities for 5G services, including optimizing the delivery of mobile data. In this chapter, we first define the available resources from different (mobile) devices and users as well as cloud resource providers; example resources include the domains of hardware, software, and networking. Noting that users ultimately control all of these resources, we present different forms of cooperation that enable the sharing of tangible and intangible resources in mobile clouds. Following this, we provide an overview of the different networking technologies in use by mobile devices today, before we introduce Network Coding as an approach to cope with the increasingly localized large amounts of mobile data. Finally in this chapter, we provide a case study example of Network Coding in the context of the mobile cloud as platform for future mobile networking services.
