Abstract

Carbon concrete as a material substitute for reinforced concrete must prove itself. The question arises as to how sustainable this building material combination is. In addi-tion to the ecological perspective, this question can also be answered from an economic point of view. For this purpose, the economic efficiency during the entire life cycle must be considered. The subject of this publication is the monetary comparison of the costs for the production, use and final re-cycling of a component made of carbon concrete with a com-parable component made of reinforced concrete. The result is that the manufacturing costs of components made of carbon concrete are currently at least 30 % higher than those of reinforced concrete. Future price developments will probably not make carbon concrete components more cost-effective than reinforced concrete components. However, it will be more ad-vantageous if, after the demolition of the components, revenu-es can be generated from recycled carbon fibres or if the manufacturing costs are put in relation to the useful life of the components. As a result of the longer durability of carbon con-crete, there is already a cost advantage per year of use if the components can be used for around 30 years longer.
