Abstract
Lake Vostok is the largest subglacial lake known today. It is located
in central East Antarctica, below 4 km thick ice. The article gives a concise overview of the history and main results of its multidisciplinary exploration as well as our present knowledge of this unique ecosystem. Geodesists of Technische Universität Dresden have been contributing since 2001 to the Lake Vostok research.
