Abstract

Because of the climate change, heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, leading to heated street environments, particularly in cities. The increase in temperature causes health risks for vulnerable people and reduces the quality of life and the livability of public spaces. Consequently, urban planning needs to address the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect with appropriate measures for climate change adaptation. Existing approaches for identifying areas at risk of overheating often lack the necessary level of detail. Therefore, it is impossible to establish a direct connection to specific streets, analyze causes and derive suitable adaptation measures. This paper introduces an approach that utilizes data from a Mobile Mapping System to precisely map and assess UHI risk areas within the urban street network. The evaluation concept is designed to recommend targeted measures to improve the microclimate.
