Abstract
Ground water is the most important source of drinking water in many countries. Due to rapid industrialisation and human mismanagement, the ground water pollution in many places has reached a level that demands immediate attention and scientific and technological solutions for remediation on an urgent basis. For the restoration of the contaminated aquifers, remediation efforts are used at the contamination source and plummet, to eliminate and extract the contaminants. Remediation of contaminated aquifers is very complex, as the process of movement of contaminants through the porous media is quite complex. Ground water pollution remediation can be carried out using on-site or in-situ techniques. As the commonly used on-site technique of pump and treat is not efficient and takes long time for remediation, efficient in-situ techniques are very much essential. In this paper, the use of an in-situ hydraulic technique called vertical circulation well for the ground water pollution remediation is described. Here the hydraulic principles of the circulation well, applications, merits and limitations, modelling aspects and a field case study are presented. The vertical circulation well has been found to be an efficient in-situ hydraulic technique for the remediation of volatile organic contaminants in ground water.
