Abstract
Islet transplantation has evolved into a viable treatment option for patients with type-1 diabetes mellitus. However, due to the requirement for chronic immunosuppression and the critical lack for donor organs, only selected patients with unstable metabolic control and repeated severe hypoglycaemia are eligible. The primary goal of this therapeutic option represents enhanced metabolic control, prevention of severe complications, and signifi cant improvement of quality of life rather than complete insulin independency.
