Abstract

This paper investigates a combined star-delta winding for a line start permanent magnet synchronous motor and compares it with a standard star winding by analytical, Finite Element and experimental methods. The winding increases the machine's d- and q-axes inductances and induced voltage. At grid operation, this yields lower stator currents and stator ohmic losses as well as lower flux and core losses. Circulating currents in the delta sub-winding are found to be a minor problem at the investigated prototype.
