Abstract
Monte Carlo event generators play a central role in particle collider data analysis by providing accurate theoretical predictions of complex scattering processes. Within SHERPA, the decays of heavy resonances are simulated using the hard decay framework. Up to now, they have only been calculated at leading order (LO). In this work, the next-to-leading order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculation for the decay of a Higgs boson into a bottom-antibottom quark pair is implemented within the hard decay framework. The computation includes the evaluation of virtual loop corrections, real-emission contributions, and the cancellation of infrared (IR) singularities using subtraction terms. The individual components of the calculation were validated through comparisons with results from one of SHERPA’s matrix element generators COMIX. While the real-emission contributions and their subtraction terms are implemented consistently, discrepancies remain in the virtual correction and corresponding subtraction term, and therefore require further investigation. Nevertheless, first physical results were obtained by substituting these contributions with reference values from COMIX. The analysis shows that the inclusion of NLO corrections reduces the partial decay width of 𝐻 → 𝑏‾𝑏 compared to the LO prediction, improving the agreement with reference values from the literature. In addition, several distributions of relevant observables were studied, comparing LO and NLO predictions.
