Abstract

The research field of social mobile clouds is looking into the possibility to increase the potential of cooperation among selfishly driven users by introducing novel technologies such as network coding as well as socially driven incentives introduced by several wellknown social networks. Recoding is a key feature of network coding that differentiates it from other available error correction codes and allows any node to recode even though it has not received the full information. Using network coding each user is coding its own packets before broadcasting it to the neighbors. Newly received information is used when recoding. In case of large field size, coded broadcast information will be seen as novel by each receiver. In real systems, the link characteristics among mobile devices are not homogenous, which favors the use of network coding. XOR-oriented network coding needs the knowledge about the packets that have been received or not received at individual nodes to work efficiently, which makes it less useful for user cooperation.
