Abstract
Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship programs provide hospital pharmacists the opportunity to take over more responsibility in the qualitative management of antimicrobial therapies in the hospital, although a special education as Infectious Disease Pharmacist is not available for pharmacists in Germany. A guideline named "Strategien zur Sicherung rationaler Antibio-tika-Anwendung im Krankenhaus", which defines corresponding methods and applies the pharmacist as essential member of the team, should be finished by the end of 2009. Thus the pharmacist has the opportunity to position himself newly in the daily routine in hospital. Within the scope of DART (Deutsche Anti-biotika-Resisitenz-Strategie) existing monitoring systems, in which pharmacists take part substantially, should be strengthened. Also further training in "Antibiotic Stewardship" has been requested and will hospital pharmacists provide the opportunity to specialize for "Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship" programs.
