Abstract
Background: Attitudes towards contraception are continuously changing. Especially young and modern women seem to be more critical about hormonal contraception than in the past. An increased sensitivity regarding side effects and possible risks of the contraceptive methods is perceivable during many counselling sessions. Objective: Is the attitude toward hormonal contraception changing? Does the hormone-free copper intrauterine device (IUD) represent an alternative? Material and methods: Research in modern media and a literature search in medical publication platforms on intrauterine and hormonal contraception. Results: Hormone-free intrauterine contraception is increasingly considered as an alternative to hormonal contraception by adolescents and young women. Intrauterine contraception is highly effective and safe in preventing pregnancies, even among young users. Side effects, complications and contraindications of the copper IUD differ from those of hormonal contraception. Discussion: The copper IUD is the most important and safest alternative to hormonal contraception. After consideration of both the advantages and disadvantages of each method in counselling sessions, women can make informed decisions about which contraceptive method suits their individual needs and preferences.
