Abstract

Microfluidics plays an essential part for studying living microorganisms in a high throughput manner, as well as with improved spatial and temporal resolution. Microfluidic devices allow the precise control of environmental conditions for cultivation. For batch cultivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae we created separated cultivation chambers through integrated Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide-co-Acrylate (PNIPAAm-co-SA) hydrogels, into a microfluidic device. Chambers are prevented from dehydration by a perfusion system. We show that growth follows typical batch cultivation while dehydration is avoided. In the future, we further want to improve the here described system and apply it to various biological questions.
