Abstract

Removable partial dentures are a common treatment option for the reduced dentition, and in Germany, approximately 90% of all attachment elements are double crowns. Implants as additional abutments under existing removable partial dentures show favorable results, especially in cases with unfavorable abutment-tooth distributions. However, it has to be considered that on average, one of every five implants is affected by peri-implantitis after 10 years of function. Often, oral hygiene is difficult and inadequate for implant-retained removable partial dentures. Adequate cleaning of the implants and abutment teeth as well as the prosthesis is a prerequisite for the longevity of the prosthodontic restoration. In this article, the use of cleaning splints to support the patient's oral hygiene, especially for critical proximal tooth and implant surfaces, is presented on the basis of patient cases.
